Who should automate your workflows?

Short answer

A marketplace is quickest to post on, but you describe the job and check the work. A Zapier or Make partner fits once you’ve chosen the tool. An in-house hire fits a full-time backlog. A fixed-scope build fits one defined job across several systems, with a documented handoff.

Honest answer

When each one is the better choice

Each option wins somewhere. Two or more of these holding is a good sign it fits.

  • Upwork

    • The job is small and clear enough to describe in a paragraph.
    • Someone on your team can check the work before it goes live.
  • Toptal

    • You want a freelancer matched to you, not picked from proposals.
    • You want a trial period before you’re charged.1
  • Zapier or Make partner

    • You’ve already chosen Zapier or Make, and the work stays on it.
    • You want a free discovery call before you commit.2
  • In-house hire

    • Automation work fills a full-time role, week after week.
    • You want someone on staff who owns the systems long term.
  • LOJIK build

    • One defined job crosses several systems, and nobody in-house has time to build it.
    • A person has to approve changes to money or customer records, with a log you can read.

Talk it through
What does it cost to hire someone on Upwork?

The freelancer sets the rate. Clients on the free Basic plan also pay a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on payments, and a one-time Contract Initiation Fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per new contract.45

Should I hire a Zapier or Make expert?

If you’ve already picked the tool and the work stays on it, yes. Zapier’s Solution Partner directory filters by project budget, minimum spend and free discovery call; Make’s Partner Directory lists certified Make experts by specialization and tier.23

Is it cheaper to hire an automation engineer in-house?

Only if the work fills the role. The median wage was $105,850 for computer systems analysts and $135,980 for software developers in May 2025, and benefits were 30.0% of private-industry compensation costs in June 2026. A fixed-scope build is a one-time price, quoted after a review of the workflow, not a salary with benefits on top.678

What does a LOJIK build include?

A proposal that sets the scope, schedule and price for you to approve, a human review step anywhere money or customer records change, and a documented handoff so your team can run it.
